Welcome to the Newmarket & Area Branch of ORMTA
Ontario Registered Music Teachers' Association

SUMMARY OF EVENTS:
The following is a brief description of ORMTA Newmarket & Area Branch events. For further details, please contact your branch teacher or branch executive member.

Canada Music Week Recital is held the third week of November. Whether it be performances of works written by Canadian composers such as Boris Berlin or Linda Niamath, or performances of songs made famous by Canadian artists such as Celine Dion, or performances of Canadian anthems such as the theme from Hockey Night in Canada, this recital is a celebration of music in Canada. Refreshments. Recital dress code for performers.

Music in the Mall is a "fun event" held on the 1st or 2nd weekend of December. Students entertain mall shoppers with their music. Go shopping and enjoy a music recital, all in the same trip!

Student/Teacher Showcase is a fundraising concert for awards & scholarships. This 'formal' recital features specially selected performances by talented young pianists, vocalists, and instrumentalists, as well as branch teachers. Recital dress code for performers. Refreshments.

Anything Goes Recital is a "fun event" for all ages, levels, & student abilities. There is no recital dress code, and all types of music are welcomed. Refreshments.

Adult Recital is a small recital with a limited audience hosted by a local branch member. This event for adults (age 18 & over) who wish to share their music in a friendly, supportive environment. Refreshments.

Auditions (performance evaluations) are held twice annually, usually in December and April. Student performances are evaluated by a professional examiner or adjudicator in the privacy of a music teacher's studio. Students who achieve a mark of A- (75% for senior levels) qualify for the following branch recitals. Students who achieve a mark of A (80% for senior levels) qualify for the awards festival held in May. Students may use these branch auditions to receive additional ideas & feedback for developing their musical skills in a private, friendly, & supportive environment. They are also a great way to test out an examination or competition program, before doing the "real thing". The auditions are for all levels of students from beginner to advanced. Both competitive and non-competitive entrants are welcome.

Branch Recitals are held semiannually in January and April. Students qualify for the branch recitals by achieving a minimum mark of A- (75% for grades 8 & up) in the preceding auditions. Recital dress code for performers.

Awards Festival is our year-end competition held in May. Students who achieve a minimum mark of A (80% for grades 8 & up) in one or more of the audition categories (solo, duet, trio, etc.) are eligible to take part. Recital dress code for performers.

Zone Competitions are held on the 2nd Saturday of May. One top student per category qualifies for this "regional" event through the local branch audition process. Talented senior level students from across the GTA perform at this public recital.
