Winter/Spring 2008
The Newmarket & Area Branch had a very active fall under the leadership of our new president, Richard Heinzle.
Our fall auditions were adjudicated by Sharon Perkins (piano), Catherine Robbin (voice), and Katherine Rapoport (violin). A Branch recital (for students achieving the A+, A, or A- level) followed on January 12th.
Teacher Paulette Popp hosted a fall workshop with Clayton Scott. The topic was “The Perfectionist Child––The Perfectionist Parent”.
Northridge Community Church in Newmarket was the venue for our Canada Music Week Recital on November 24th––St. Cecilia’s Day, which honours the patron saint of music. Fifty-four performers from ten studios played and sang the music of twenty-seven Canadian composers.
Our ORMTA Branch was once again invited to bring our piano students to Upper Canada Mall in Newmarket, where they performed for Christmas shoppers in the new atrium of the mall. Thank you to all who participated.
Congratulations to John-Michael who won first place in last fall’s nationally televised Triple Sensation (singing, dancing and acting) competition. A $150,000 scholarship will go to further his studies in drama or musical theatre. John-Michael is a student of two Newmarket and Area ORMTA teachers; Irene Ilic (voice) and Raymond Lorenz (piano).
Congratulations to Lauren and Samantha, vocal students of Irene Ilic, who won the first and second prizes respectively in the vocal division of the Level C zone competitions. Congratulations also go to Taylor, a piano student of Mary Lou Stanton, who won second prize in the Level C zone competitions. These competitions were all held in Toronto in June 2007.
Newmarket and Area Branch is now pleased to have its own web site. Thanks to Sheila McLean for her work in promoting and collecting data for this project. Students and teachers look forward to seeing their photos, taken at ORMTA Branch events, on the new site.
